Background Information:

The ultimate life experience - space and zero gravity. Space is one of the harshest environments that humans have encountered, presenting unique and life-threatening challenges to the astronauts who have to live and work in this environment. In low Earth orbit, above the Earth's protective atmosphere, astronauts are exposed to high amounts of radiation and operate within a physical environment that the human body is not designed to live in. Future exploration efforts for returning to the Moon and going on to Mars will require an extensive knowledge of how to adapt to and counter the effects of space life.

Capt. Wendy Lawrence, (USN, Ret.) Professor of Space Physiology at American Public University, and Dr. Jim Reilly, Dean of the School of Science and Technology, discussed their personal experiences of Living in Space.

Our Guest Speakers Discussed:

  • Living and working onboard the International Space Station
  • Long-term effects of living in space has on the human body and mind, including challenges such as bone and muscle mass loss
  • Traveling in space - the journey from liftoff to re-entry
  • How education will shape the future of the U.S. space program and exploration of interplanetary space

Additionally, this live webcast included a question and answer session.
